Zorro heading to a dystopian future for its reboot?

It’s no surprise that any franchise that has at one point been good and/or had a fanbase is getting rebooted, but now these ideas are getting step past “TOTAL RECALL without Mars.”

The new word is that Zorro is not only getting a makeover, but one that transports him to the future for a complete reinvention of the character in a film called ZORRO REBORN.

Unlike many of the previous Zorros (real name: Don Diego de la Vega) brandishing whips and swords, the hero of the new installment will live in the future — specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one, according to a person familiar with the film who asked not to be identified.

In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and “No Country for Old Men.”

So let’s say, V for Vendetta, but we’re calling him Zorro.

Much like Battleship and Asteroids, I don’t understand the brand association here. You want to make a movie about a skilled warrior seeking revenge in the future? Awesome, I’m actually even a bit interested. But why drag the Zorro name into it? What is this guy going to have in common with him other than a name and probably a mask?

For once I’m hoping for a movie to get stuck in development hell.
