James Gunn has said that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the “last time people will see this team of Guardians.” Several of the actors have hinted that the sequel could see the conclusion of their characters, such as Dave Bautista’s Drax and Karen Gillan’s Nebula, but is Zoe Saldaña also ready to say goodbye to Gamora?
While speaking with Variety, Zoe Saldaña was asked if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be her last Marvel movie. “I can never say no to anything, but that green makeup? I wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t happen again,” Saldaña said. “I miss Gamora but I don’t miss 3:30 a.m. calls and five-hour makeup sessions and trips to the dermatologist afterwards.” Having to slather on the green makeup every single day isn’t always easy, but Saldaña said that the impact these characters have on fans always kept her coming back for more. “Every time that you know that 8-year-old or that dad and mom or those generational fans that remind me that what I did was special to them, it makes me not be cynical about Marvel,” Saldaña said. “It makes me understand that younger audiences should stop being overlooked,” she says. “They have feelings too and if something impacts them, just because we consider it stupid or immature or cheeky, doesn’t mean it’s not special.“
As for how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is shaping up, James Gunn told THR that it’s coming along great. “It’s a big movie, and it’s so different from the special because the special is so wacky and insane,” Gunn said. “The movie is so emotional, but it’s been a real joy making it. So it’s coming along great. I still have a ton of visual effect shots I’m working on, and of course, putting the score together with John Murphy, which is gigantic. So those are the things I’ve been focusing on most, lately.” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
