If you'd like to steer clear of spoilers for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, it's probably best to move on. For the rest of you, let's get going. When Zendaya was first cast in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, it was said that she would be playing a "key role" in the Spidey flick as Michelle, a character who would go on to become "a bigger part in future installments." According to a new report by The Wrap, Michelle may have just been a code-name for a much more important character in the SPIDER-MAN universe.
The outlet reports that Zendaya will actually be playing, drum-roll, Spider-Man's long-time girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. For fans who would prefer that actors look precisely like the comic-book characters they play, this news may come as a bit of a surprise as Zendaya didn't look all that much like the Mary Jane we're used to in the set-photo's we've seen. I've got no issue with putting a different spin on established characters, but as I've seen exactly nothing of Zendaya's prior acting work, I can't comment on if she's a good fit for Mary Jane Watson or not; I'll leave that up to you good folks.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is set for a July 7, 2017 release.
