Zack Snyder. If you want to see the best and the worst of the internet, just type his name into the Twitter Search bar, press enter, and grab yourself some popcorn. Love him or hate him, the man definitely has a unique vision and his polarizing movies put asses in seats… well, except for maybe Sucker Punch. Now that the Snyder Cut movement is over… OR IS IT!? We are excited to see what Zack Snyder brings to the table in his upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon which is expected to hit the streaming service sometime in 2023, but we here at Joblo wanted to pit Snyder’s first movie against his very latest. Yes, we’re talking about 2004’s remake of Dawn of the Dead versus the zombie action/heist film Army of the Dead.
Nowadays, remaking horror movies is a huge critical and financial risk. Looking back on the 2000s, it seemed that we were living through a nightmare where our beloved horror classics were being soullessly rebooted or remade. From Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street to The Hills Have Eyes and House of Wax, it seemed that most of them were flops. However, with George A. Romero’s blessing, Universal took a gamble on unknown director Zack Snyder as well as writer James Gunn and brought us a fantastic reimagining of Dawn of the Dead, which was released in March 2004. Upon its release, the film knocked The Passion Of The Christ off the number one spot at the box office. Besides scaring the living shit out of us, it set Zack Snyder onto his path of becoming a very colorful, successful, and visionary film director. The movie was praised by audiences and critics alike, even filmmaker Quentin Tarantino adored the film. Then last year, Zack went back to his zombie movie roots with Netflix’s Army of the Dead, which at the time of its release, broke Netflix streaming records. However, which one of these intense romps of zombie mayhem is the superior flick?
So grab your weapons and zombie repellent spray, board up your windows and lock your doors, and prepare yourself for the undead onslaught because it’s time for another… FACE OFF! This episode of Face Off is written by Jay Saint G, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Jay Saint G. But don’t let us have the final word — tell us in the comments which film from this Snyder zombie double feature you prefer. Dawn of the Dead or Army of the Dead?
