WATCHMEN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, and DAWN OF THE DEAD director Zack Snyder is gearing up to start filming his upcoming "balls-to-the-wall" zombie heist epic ARMY OF THE DEAD for Netflix. And today we have word that shooting may be starting sooner than we thought as it appears Snyder and crew will begin filming in June. Not only that, but there's a rumor that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and BLADE RUNNER 2049 star Dave Bautista may be joining the cast.
This rumor comes to us via Bautista himself who was recently doing an interview where he let slip that "he's working on a Zack Snyder project." Is he talking about ARMY OF THE DEAD? I guess we'll see soon… The zombie horror thriller was originally set up at Warner Bros. back in 2007 (after 300 was a huge hit for the studio) but since then, the film has moved into the hands of none other than Netflix, which is evidently letting Snyder go full-tilt boogie on this movie with Snyder recently saying:
There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one. I thought this was a good palate cleanser to really dig in with both hands and make something fun and epic and crazy and bonkers in the best possible way.
I love to honor canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself through a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].
I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up. When the movie gets super big, you get pushed away from the camera. And in the last few years, I’ve had a reconnection with photography. This movie will be a chance to get the camera in hand.
On top of directing ARMY OF THE DEAD, Snyder will also produce the movie with his wife, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller, based on a story by Snyder that was scripted by Joby Harold (AWAKE). The adventure is set amid
A zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
Netflix and Zack Snyder's "balls-to-the-wall" zombie horror action movie ARMY OF THE DEAD is said to have a big budget in the neighborhood of $90 million so I'm thinking we can all expect to see some crazy-ass action coming our way once this film hits. Let's just hope the final product is more DAWN OF THE DEAD than BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Not hating, just saying.
