Warner Bros. is dead set on making another GREMLINS movie, whether you like it or not. As long as they can figure out a way to get Gizmo in it and bring back more Gremlins, they’re good to go. They already have GOOSEBUMPS’ Carl Ellsworth hard at work, trying to crack the script, and Christopher Columbus is on-board to produce, so it’s really not a matter of if, but when.
But what exactly is this next GREMLINS flick going to be? Columbus has said in the past that it won’t be a remake, with the new take being a reboot of sorts… and now it appears GREMLINS star Zach Galligan (Billy Peltzer) is weighing in on the conversation with what he’s heard.
Appearing at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square for a special holiday screening of GREMLINS, Galligan was asked about this other GREMLINS, and here’s what he had to say on the matter…
It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart, and as long as he is alive, it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.
All of the elements from the first, at least the first Gremlins movie… Chris Columbus didn’t really have much to do with the second Gremlins movie so I don’t know how he feels about that… but all of the things and events that happened in the first one will be referred to. And apparently some of the characters from the first one will reappear in the new one they are planning right now. I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.
That seems to be the way to go with revisiting these once-popular franchises that are still beloved by so many, as evidenced by the successes of JURASSIC WORLD and CREED recently. You need to capitalize on some nostalgia from the past by acknowledging what came before in the series and bringing back old favorites to reprise their roles, and then bring something new to the table to offer up the air of freshness moving forward. A little old, a little new, and you get the right mix to lure in audiences of all kinds. It only took Hollywood how long to realize the remake model wasn’t churning out hits as they would have liked. This is the new model. Let’s see if it holds up.
