Young Sheldon earns three-season renewal at CBS

Young Sheldon isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The Big Bang Theory prequel series has earned a three-season renewal at CBS. This will take the series through the 2023-24 season.

This marks the second multiple-season renewal for the series which is actually in the middle of its previous two-season renewal. This gives it something in common with The Big Bang Theory which was known for its multiple-season renewals during its very successful run on CBS. CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl had this to say about the big Young Sheldon re-up:

"Under Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro's deft leadership, this superb cast and gifted writers have truly brought these wonderful characters to life. Young Sheldon dominates the broadcast comedy landscape by over 2.5 million viewers and is the lynchpin of CBS’ top-rated Thursday comedy lineup. The humor, warmth and heart exuded by the Cooper family is an undeniable hook for the millions of fans who tune in each week. We’re excited to see what the next three seasons have in store for a slightly older Sheldon and all the Coopers."

Young Sheldon took over Big Bang Theory's key Thursdays at 8:00 PM slot and continues to be a sizable for CBS, averaging more than 9.6 million total viewers each week. Show creator Chuck Lorre is saying goodbye to one of his other long-running series on the network as Mom will be ending its run in May. The Young Sheldon renewal ensures that he stays at CBS and with Warner Bros. Television, where he has been based for years. According to "The Hollywood Reporter", Warners and Lorre continue to negotiate terms of a new overall deal after his current multiple-year pact expired last summer. Lorre continues to be an important persona at the network and he is responsible for all of CBS's Thursday primetime originals and has generated billions of dollars for the network and studio, respectively. Additionally, Lorre and Warners cashed in with streaming sales to HBO Max for both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon.

Young Sheldon is led by Iain Armitage who plays the titular character, a younger version of the beloved role played by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory. In the fourth season of the show, which debuted in November, Armitage’s Sheldon is 11 years old, graduating from Medford High School before going to college via a summer job at the local train museum, and attempts to ride his bike without training wheels. The series also stars  Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and Annie Potts.
