Most of the horror in You Won’t Be Alone is explored in its many themes but if the film has a central “monster”, it’s the witch Maria, played by Anamaria Marinca. Maria is an embittered witch that has terrified children for over 200 years and she is longing for a daughter. Once she finally gets one as her companion, it becomes clear that Maria is driven more by loneliness than maternal nature.
Anamaria Marinca is superb in the role and during my chat, with her, I was just struck by how sweet she was. In the film, she is layered in grotesque make-up to make her more frightening but Marinca is all smiles and sweet disposition as we discussed the movie. We talked about what drew her to the part, working with director Goran Stolevski, and how long the actual make-up process was to turn her into Maria.
You Won’t Alone stars Noomi Rapace, Anamaria Marinca, Alice Englert, Carloto Cotta, Felix Maritaud, and Sara Klimoska. The movie made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition section on January 22, 2022, and it’s scheduled to release in theatres on April 1, 2022.
