Have you ever wanted to soar through the air like Iron Man? Have you ever walked out of a Marvel movie and thought, 'Damn, if only I had repulsor blasters built into the palms of my hands. Then I'd show 'em. I'd show them all!' Well, I'm here to tell you that Sony's got your back, because during this morning's State of Play live stream, the games publisher announced that Marvel's Iron Man VR is comin' in hot!
The upcoming virtual-reality game is set to launch later this year, and will allow players to become Marvel's iconic genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, Tony Stark. Sony also launched a trailer alongside the announcement, which features a scene of Tony being sucked out the damaged side of a plane and suiting up while in mid-air. After transforming into the MCU's first hero, Tony (the player) careens through the air, taking out robots, fighter pilots, and only The Watcher knows what else.
While the concept certainly sounds enticing, I can't quite shake the feeling that the game looks to be little more than an on-rails shooter a la Sewer Shark for the Sega CD. Aww yeah, deep cuts, y'all. Be that as it may, free-form movement has always been a challenge in VR. Much of the reason for this is because giving the player total control of the camera can often yield unwieldy results, such as motion sickness. In short, my fear is that VR isn't quite there yet with regard to truly capturing the desired sensation of becoming Iron Man. That said, VR is rarely impressive until you've actually participated in the experience first-hard, so perhaps I should give this potentially exciting game the benefit of the doubt, no?
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think of Marvel's Iron Man VR. Are my concerns justified or do I need to take a page out of Tony's book and just let the good times roll? Sound off in the comments section below.
