Cue the fireworks! Disney has cast Chinese-born Yoson An (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, SWORD OF DESTINY) in the live-action version of MULAN. The New Zealand immigrant who's appeared in such films as GHOST BRIDE and THE MEG will step into the role of Mulan's (Liu Yifei) love interest, Chen Honghui, a military recruit.
The live-action version of Disney's 1988 animated classic is set to be directed by Niki Caro (WHALE RIDER, NORTH COUNTRY) with a predominantly Chinese cast ready and willing to bring the "princess warrior in disguise" fairytale to life on the big screen. Starring alongside Yifei and An in the film are cinema legends Jet Li, Gong Li, Ron Yuan, and Donnie Yen. The story takes place during the Han Dynasty, and shares the inspiring tale of Hua Mulan, the daughter of a legendary warrior who infiltrates her kingdom's armed forces in an effort to protect its people from a Hun invasion.
Disney's MULAN is just one of many live-action adaptations being set up by the House of Mouse. The list of known projects in-the-works includes Disney's CHRISTOPHER ROBIN, DUMBO, ALADDIN, THE LION KING, MALEFICENT 2, PINOCCHIO, PRINCE CHARMING, OLIVER TWIST, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, CRUELLA, TINK, PETER PAN, LADY AND THE TRAMP, THE SWORD IN THE STONE, and SNOW WHITE. Yeah, it's a lot. Damn you, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!
