Director Yorgos Lanthimos has made a lot of dark films with horrific subject matter throughout his career (even his lighter fare like THE LOBSTER has a woman bloodily murdering the main character's brother-turned-dog), though has only made a nominal horror film with KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (which is still more of a pitch black comedy). So it's nice to see him go full horror with the western creature feature THE HAWKLINE MONSTER, based on the 1974 book by Richard Brautigan, about
two unlikely hero gunslingers hired by a 15-year-old girl named Magic Child to kill the monster that lives in ice caves under the basement of a house inhabited by a young woman named Miss Hawkline. What follows is a unique adventure where there is more to Magic Child, Miss Hawkline and the house than meets the eye.
Meanwhile, THR reports that Lanthimos is teaming up with screenwriter (and creator of the Hulu series THE GREAT) Tony McNamara for the upcoming adaptation. Both worked together on the Emma Stone period piece THE FAVOURITE.
This particular project has actually been decades in the making, with both Hal Ashby and Tim Burton attached to direct at different points, and with Jeff and Beau Bridges once circled to play the two gunslingers. Let's hope this version gets made!
But what do you guys think? Fans of the book? If so, who would you cast as the main characters? Either way, sound off below!
