So, like it says in the headline, THE BOONDOCK SAINTS are indeed getting their own TV show. We can add that to the list of the growing sub-genre that includes 12 MONKEYS, LETHAL WEAPON, and the recently concluded BATES MOTEL. They even got the original writer director Troy Duffy on board!
What's strange, though, is that it's called BOONDOCK SAINTS: ORIGIN, which doesn't make much sense, as the first film was their origin, and the (awful) second one even showed the rise of their father. So, I mean, how far back do they plan on going? Anyway, here's what Duffy had to say about the project:
A television series is the perfect medium for story telling inside the world of our beloved blue collar super heroes. The brothers have always been defenders of the people, justice, fairness and the city of Boston…In this sensitive time of human rights unrest, government scandal and civil corruption, there couldn’t be a better moment to re-launch the brothers iconic brand of justice in the Cradle of Democracy.
Now, I personally feel that THE BOONDOCK SAINTS (at least the first one) is both over and underrated. On the one hand, every dude-bro douchebag usually has a BOONDOCK SAINTS poster in their room, and will espouse how the film is "so wicked deep, brah!" (which it isn't). But, at the same time, this is a really fun movie, with a great performance by Willem Defoe as awesome gay detective Paul Smecker (pre-empting Val Kilmer's Perry van Shrike from KISS KISS BANG BANG by six years), a decent gimmick (seeing the aftermath of a Boondocks hit, and then seeing the action in reverse), and some well-choreographed action scenes (like the rope hit). And, honestly, that same dude-bro almost inevitably also has PULP FICTION and FIGHT CLUB posters on his walls, and that doesn't make those movies any less awesome either.
So any other BOONDOCK SAINTS fans? And if so, what do you feel about the announcement?
No release date, or network to pick it up, at the moment, but we'll keep you updated when anything else comes up.
