I remember being excited when the first xXx film came out in the early 2000's. While I loved the idea of spy movies (fast cars, explosions, shoot-outs), I never really liked spy movies (and especially hated James Bond for various reasons. Still do, minus most of the Craig ones, but that's besides the point). Thing is, I felt underserved by the sub-genre. So when I heard that there was going to be an "EXXTREME" spy movie with Rammstein and shit, I was hooked (and to be fair, that intro rocked).
Then the movie came out, and it was kind of lame. Not terrible, just crushingly mediocre (especially a really dumb line about Xander being able to shoot rocket launchers because of playing Playstation. Ugh.) Then there was an even lamer sequel, this time without Vin Diesel (I like Ice Cube, and the shittiness wasn't really his fault, though he wasn't great in it either). Either way, it seemed the franchise had ran its course.
Now there's inexplicably another sequel coming out, now that Vin Diesel is a marquee star again. But is it worth the wait? Well here's a clip with him and Donnie Yen (IP MAN, ROGUE ONE) in a fun chase scene to help clear this up. Let's check it out:
Well that was short. I mean, motorcycles that turn into jet skis is kind of cool and goofy. I can definitely get behind that. And I've loved Donnie Yen since IP MAN, and he killed it in ROGUE ONE, so here's hoping he gets more cool stuff to do in this film. I mean, I can't really pass judgement on the film based on the clip alone, but coupled with the eye-rollingly bad trailer (at least in my opinion), there doesn't seem to be a lot of hope with this one.
But what do you guys think? Any fans of the xXx franchise, as it were? And if so, what do you think of the new sequel?
xXx: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE will bro it up January 20th, 2017, the month when all the best films are released and not dumped by a skittish studio to be buried.
