After being brought onboard the X-Men franchise as a writer of X-Men: The Last Stand, Simon Kinberg went on to produce the rest of the X-Men movies, including X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Logan, Deadpool 2, The New Mutants, and Dark Phoenix, which he also directed. Now that the franchise is under the control of Marvel Studios, we’ve got an X-Men reboot in our future, and Simon Kinberg is eager to see what Marvel does with the characters.
While speaking with CBR, Simon Kinberg said “I love the characters. I love the comics. I adore [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige. I adore what he’s done. I’m such an admirer of what he’s done with the MCU. I would always be open to working on it, because I love the characters so much.” Even if he’s not involved with the X-Men reboot, Kinberg is “really interested” to see what they do it the franchise. Kinberg also likened the X-Men characters to Shakespeare, as there have been “tons of fascinating versions of Hamlet” and the same can be done with the X-Men.
I myself started with the original X-Men cast and then went into the First Class cast and then put them together in a movie and split them back up again and did something very different with Logan than what we were doing with Wolverine and the X-Men mainline franchise. So there’s just so many different ways you can go tonally and cast-wise.
Although the X-Men are now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Disney’s acquisition of Fox, it could be some time before we see them officially join up. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that when the X-Men do show up, “Whatever we do will be quite different than what’s been done before.” What are your hopes for Marvel’s X-Men reboot?
