Updated: X-Men producer says Channing Tatum will play Gambit

UPDATE: According to THR (and other sources), Tatum is "confirmed" to star in a Gambit spinoff film after being introduced in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. No director is attached and the project is said to be "in development." We'll update as more details become available. – PS

Apparently Channing Tatum's meeting with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST producer Lauren Shuler Donner went well, because the producer just confirmed Tatum will play Gambit.

While taking part in the X-Men X-Perience Global Tour last night, Total Film asked Lauren Shuler Donner what type of actor they are looking for to play the mutant, and if they were still interested in Channing Tatum for Gambit since he's shown interest in playing the character.

Donner says, "It is Channing," and also talked about why she thinks he'll make a good Gambit.

"Well, he's a rogue, Channing. He's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, we all know that. And he has a really good heart, because I know him personally. I did a movie with him. So I think he'll be great for Gambit. He's a Southerner too. He's not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner and understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans."

Lauren Shuler Donner also says the next characters she'd like to bring to the big screen besides Gambit are X-FORCE (which will be directed by Jeff Wadlow) and Deadpool.

99% of you weren't too happy to hear Channing Tatum was being considered for Gambit, and I'll be the first to admit I've never been the biggest fan of the actor, but I think he could do a solid job playing the character. He surprised many people with his MAGIC MIKE and 21 JUMP STREET, maybe he'll surprise us once again as Gambit.

I'm sure you all have something to say, so let's hear it: what are your thoughts on Channing Tatum playing Gambit?
