X-Files creator Chris Carter discusses a key relationship in the new series

If you're looking to stay pure, you should know that the following article will contain spoilers. All set? Good, let's go. Fox's upcoming revival of The X-Files recently wrapped production and series creator Chris Carter spoke with THR earlier today where he wondered just how the team managed to produce the 202 original episodes when these six took so much out of him:

We just wrapped the six episodes, and I look and I see that we did 202 episodes of the show, I honestly don’t know how we did it. I was exhausted by the end of these six episodes. I think what the show benefited from a lot of youthful energy. I always say about the show that we didn’t know what we couldn't do, so we just tried everything. And luckily, we had the people working with us, and for us, that always gave it a shot.

Earlier this year news that Mulder and Scully will have split up before the premiere of the first new episode was met by mixed reception. Despite the outrage by a certain fans, Carter maintains that there was always talk of splitting the couple up and that it will add some much needed tension to these new stories.

We do it in an interesting way, we play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It’s something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie.

Appearing at Pittsburgh's Wizard World Comic Con over the weekend, David Duchovny hinted that the pair may not even reconcile at the conclusion of the six-episode series. "In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged," said Duchovny. "I don't know where it's going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode…" Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner) suggested "Can we say maybe yet to be determined? Is that appropriate?" to which Duchovny agreed, "It's yet to be determined."

The X-Files returns to Fox on January 24, 2016, but some lucky fans will get to view the first episode when it screens at New York Comic-Con on October 10, 2015. The first episode, titled "My Struggle", will see Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee. Of course it will.
