We can finally stop with the X-FILES rumors. That’s because rumors are no longer necessary – X-FILES 2 is officially on. Fox announced today that X-FILES 2 will hit theaters on July 25, 2008 with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both reprising their roles from the hit TV series. Like many of the show’s best episodes, series creator Chris Carter will direct from a script he co-wrote with Frank Spotnitz. As you might expect, very little is known about the plot and the press release boasts that the only people who know the story are “top studio brass and the film’s principals” (OK, how long before a script review pops up on the web?). What we do know is that it will be a stand-alone story that will take the relationship of Mulder and Scully in “unexpected directions.” Pregnant? Married? Death? So far X-FILES 2 is alone on the July 25th date but it does put it one week after THE DARK KNIGHT, which could let some fanboys have a wet dream double feature. I guess the big question is how well the fanbase will return to the movie and whether today’s kids have any flipping clue what X-FILES is. Though I lost interest in the show during its slow demise, I’ll return just to see if they give me some of the closure I’ve craved over the past years.
