Wyatt Russell's John Walker got off to a rocky start on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier with the fans but as the episodes progressed, the opinion on the character began to change as his arc was fully developed. Walker was initially brought in as the new Captain America when Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) didn't initially take on the responsibilities of the shield. With each episode, we learn that Walker's insecurities, and a bit of violent mean streak, made him the wrong candidate to be the next Captain America but he does get a bit of redemption during the finale. Now that all of the episodes are available on Disney+, Russell is discussing his future with the MCU during a chat with "Vanity Fair" and it seems it all comes down to what the studio decides to do.
By the end of the finale episode, "One World, One People", Walker emerges as US Agent in the series' final moments. There is clearly more to be told with Walker's story and this is a potential setup for his MCU future but it appears, lost most actors in his position working for Marvel, he doesn't know what his future holds or if he will return in the recently announced Captain America 4:
"Part of the way I approached Marvel was it's all your last time you're going to do it. Marvel operates in a really cool way where they don't make decisions before they see what works. I'm not a part of any of this decision making, obviously."
Walker is quick to tease in regards to his character that "At the end of the series, he's grown into himself in a very dangerous way." This is something worth exploring if the MCU chooses to and I honestly think they will. Despite the initial reception of the character, the role presented a complex perspective into the legacy of Captain America. When talking about his approach to playing Walker the actor says "Hopefully you were taken from someone who you really are set up to despise down the journey of understanding where he came from. Whether or not you like it or agree with it, you're going to understand why he's doing it."
The character's origins differ from the source material but there is some potential to be taken from the comics if they wish to explore this character further. Through his time in the comics, US Agent has often jumped back-and-forth from hero to villain, something you can see the beginnings of during key moments on the series. The character has worked alongside the Avengers West Coast and The Thunderbolts while getting into his fair share of adventures on his own. (SPOILERS INCOMING IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER FINALE…YOU'VE BEEN WARNED). The arrival of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine also sets up a direction for the character as she seems to be almost grooming him for her own Nick Fury-esque team. Then there is Captain America 4, which will likely see Sam Wilson taking on the mantle as the titular hero in that installment. Walker played a part in Wilson's journey to accepting the responsibility of being Captain America so there is also potential to use him in that film as well.
How do YOU think John Walker aka US Agent will be used moving forward? Did YOU like what Wyatt Russell brought to the role?
