Y'know, this is almost too easy of a target. Two actors who have done some tremendous work throughout their careers team up to make a pile of shit. It happens from time to time. The issue here is that you have two well-established stars doing something so low rent and cheesy that it feels like it should be a straight-to-video WWE movie. Actually, that's insulting those guys, as I'm sure they'd make something that at least looks fun.
Both De Niro and Travolta have dabbled in some weird genres in the last few years, so it's not that surprising that they'd eventually find each other to make one of their "experimental paychecks," but it is a shame we're getting more of this instead of work like SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK for De Niro or FACE/OFF for Travolta. I have little doubt that both actors will deliver more good work, but I doubt KILLING SEASON will be counted among them.
Take a look:
Here's the synopsis:
American military veteran Benjamin Ford (Robert De Niro) has fled to a cabin retreat somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, to forget the painful memories of the Bosnian War he fought in. One day, visitor Emil Kovac (John Travolta), a European tourist, knocks on his door, and the two men begin an unlikely friendship. When it develops that Kovac is in fact a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge, there begins a one-on-one confrontation and battle between the two throughout the harsh mountain environment.
KILLING SEASON, directed by Mark Steven Johnson (DAREDEVIL, GHOST RIDER), is set to debut July 12, 2013.
