Chrono Trigger – WTF Happened to this Video Game?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Gather ‘round, gamers of all stripes! That includes console gamers, PC gamers, Esports champions and, yes, even you over there picking at that thing on your hand while waiting for “Red Dead Redemption II” to load (it’s not going to go away if you keep picking). As we here at JoBlo continue to roll out new and illuminating video game content through our new YouTube channel, JoBlo Gaming, we would like to introduce the first edition of our twist on an old series (“WTF Happened to this Movie?”) with “WTF Happened to this Video Game?”

Video editor and host Rich Alvarez will use this recurring segment to take a deep dive into some video games that beg the titular question, “WTF Happened?”. This means exploring games that are terrible but could have been great, or that are indeed classics but perhaps had some trouble coming to life. In the case of the subject of this first outing – the beloved 1995 classic “Chrono Trigger” – the video will explore just why, after so much success, this video game doesn’t have a proper sequel.

While the game itself is hailed as a flawless masterpiece with excellent storytelling, infectious gameplay and amazing music, the future of the series has not been given the chance to live up to its full potential. As Alvarez explores in this video, attempts at a proper sequel have been mired in setbacks and corporate shifts, and while the game “Chrono Cross” is technically considered a follow-up, it’s regarded more on its own merits than as a true sequel. Even in this wave or remasters and re-releases Square Enix seems more interested in updating games in the “Final Fantasy” series and finding new ways to bring those big yellow birds to life.
