With Blue Beetle officially in theaters, Ángel Manuel Soto is ready to announce another feature-length project. Soto is directing Wrecking Crew, a film starring Dave Bautista (Blade Runner 2049, Knock at the Cabin, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and Jason Momoa (Fast X, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, See).
Soto directs from a script by Warrior writer Jonathan Tropper. MGM is the studio. Tropper completed the script before the writers’ strike began in June. While we know the feature is a buddy comedy, further details about Wrecking Crew are a mystery.
Soto’s Blue Beetle is in theaters now. The DC superhero film earned $43.4M during its opening weekend despite receiving mostly positive reviews. Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college grad who returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. “As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab,” reads the official Blue Beetle synopsis. “When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.”
What do you think Soto’s new movie is about? With a name like Wrecking Crew, I imagine Bautista and Momoa forming a dynamic duo with explosive results. Will Bautista run through walls like Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam? Does Momoa surf onto the scene atop a crumbling wave of rubble? The sky is the limit, and there’s no telling how their personalities will clash. Is this an oil and water duo? Are they seasoned pros at demolition and destruction? Is this secretly a live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s 1984 action video game of the same name? That last statement feels like a stretch, but who knows?
Before filming for Wrecking Crew, Momoa will return as Arthur Curry in DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Meanwhile, Bautista has Army of the Dead: Las Vegas coming to Netflix, a TV series spinning out of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Bautista also stars in Dune: Part Two as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, a bestial warrior known for his sadism and cruelty, but not cunning. Bautista and Momoa strike me as an inspired pairing, and I can’t wait to see what Soto is cooking up for them.
