Statham guns for #1!
Moviegoers who were craving a bit of action this weekend got their fix with WRATH OF MAN, putting it on top at the box office with an estimated opening of $8.1 million.
The latest from director Guy Ritchie reunites him with LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, SNATCH and REVOLVER actor Jason Statham for an armored truck heist. As expected from the filmmaker, the thriller (a remake of the 2004 French movie LE CONVOYEUR) also includes plenty of bullets, machismo, twists and snappy dialogue.
The new R-rated movie, which also features Josh Hartnett, Holt McCallany and Jeffrey Donovan among the manly cast, opened internationally a couple of weeks back and now has a worldwide total of $25.6 million.
Ritchie's previous quip-filled crime saga THE GENTLEMEN opened in January 2020, and managed to collect $115 million worldwide before the global pandemic shutdown.
For some additional comparison to the "normal times" before coronavirus, the first weekend of May in 2019 had AVENGERS: ENDGAME leading the list with $145 million domestic on its second weekend (after a record-obliterating opening weekend of $357 million).
Critics were mixed on Ritchie's latest profanity-laced violence and chaos, giving the movie a 66% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 57 on Metacritic. Take aim at the JoBlo review HERE.
The R-rated anime DEMON SLAYER – THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN was in second place with $3.05 million on its third weekend in theaters. The Sony FUNimation release has a domestic total of $39.6 million and $474 million worldwide.
In third place was the videogame adaptation MORTAL KOMBAT with $2.37 million. After three weekends on screens (and also streaming on HBO Max), the R-rated Warner Bros. release has a domestic total of $37.8 million and $72.5 million worldwide, on a reported $55 million cost.
Still stomping in fourth place was GODZILLA VS. KONG with $1.93 million over its sixth weekend of release. The PG-13 Warner Bros. monster mash has a domestic total of $92.9 million and a worldwide total of $422 million, on a $200 million reported production cost.
The animated Disney adventure RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON was in fifth place with $1.8 million, a slight boost over last weekend's figure. After ten weeks, the PG-rated fantasy has a domestic total of $43.8 million and $105.7 million worldwide.
In sixth place was the supernatural thriller SEPARATION with $1.07 million, only frightening away 40% of business from its opening last weekend (despite miserable reviews). The R-rated horror release from Open Road has a ten-day domestic total of $3.3 million.
Opening in seventh place was the new comedy-drama HERE TODAY with $900,000 on 1200 screens.
The PG-13 Sony release with Tiffany Haddish and Billy Crystal (who also directed and co-wrote) didn't receive much praise from critics, who gave it a 48% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 40.
In eighth place was the R-rated action-thriller NOBODY with $760,000 for its seventh weekend, bringing the $16 million Universal release to $24.6 million domestic and $44 million worldwide.
Wrapping up the list was supernatural horror movie THE UNHOLY with $730,000 in ninth place, while animated/live-action comedy TOM & JERRY closed things out in tenth.
Next weekend has Chris Rock caught up in the grisly games of Jigsaw with SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW, while Angelina Jolie is back in action with THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD (also simultaneously releasing on HBO Max).
