Star Trek fans certainly know who Nicholas Meyer is. Of the six STAR TREK movies to feature the original cast, Meyer was involved with the very best of them. In addition to directing both STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, Meyer also co-wrote both of those movies as well as STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME. That was the end of his involvement with the Star Trek franchise for some time, until he joined the staff of CBS' Star Trek: Discovery as a writer and consulting producer. However, Nicholas Meyer later teased that Discovery wasn't the only Star Trek project which he was working on, and rumours even surfaced that the mystery project was a mini-series centered around Khan Noonien Singh.
While speaking to an audience at the University of California, Irvine, Nicholas Meyer shared a few more details about that secretive Star Trek project via TrekCore.
AUDIENCE QUESTION: A while back there were reports that you might be working on a ‘Star Trek’ miniseries, is there any truth to that, if you’re allowed to say anything about that?
MEYER: No, I can say something. I was hired to write a stand-alone ‘Star Trek’-related trilogy, [details of which] I can’t discuss or I’d have to kill you. [Laughs] I was writing it for CBS [All] Access… but at the moment CBS is at a war with Paramount/Viacom [about merging]. They’re in a power struggle which turned really nasty this past week when CBS decided to sue Viacom. So I don’t think my project is going anywhere in a hurry, because everything is on hold while they sort out this merger business. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.
The merger which Meyer speaks of is in regards to the messy business between CBS and Viacom (the parent company of Paramount). CBS is attempting to block the merger by suing National Amusements (parent company of both CBS and Paramount) in an effort to operate as "an independent, non-controlled company." The whole situation is rather complicated, but CBS CEO Les Moonves isn't seeing eye-to-eye with Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder, due to allegations that she's intending on carving up the CBS board in order to force the merger through. Who knows whether the merger will happen at this point, but until it's resolved, it seems that Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek trilogy is on hold. At least we still have the second season of Star Trek: Discovery to look forward to next year, as well as more STAR TREK movies, but I was excited to see what Meyer had cooked up for us. Here's hoping that it will hit our screen eventually.
