Wrath of Khan’s Nicholas Meyer is working on another Star Trek project

Of the six STAR TREK movies to feature the original cast, Nicholas Meyer was involved with the very best of them. In addition to directing both STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, Meyer also co-wrote both of those movies as well as STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME. Impressive credentials to be sure, so it's easy to understand why fans were excited when Nicholas Meyer joined the staff of Star Trek: Discovery as a writer and consulting producer.

Nicholas Meyer recently spoke with TrekMovie, and while he wasn't able to say much about Discovery, he did reveal that the upcoming series is not the only Star Trek project he's working on.

One thing that has nothing to do with Discovery is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either.

TrekMovie asked Nicholas Meyer whether the project was a feature film, because "as far as I know, there is only one television project, I assume." To which Meyer responded, "you can assume." The mysterious project could be anything I suppose, a book, a documentary, another home-media release of the Star Trek films, but I'd love to let my enthusiasm get the best of me and assume that it's something major. Despite STAR TREK BEYOND's lackluster box-office, a fourth film in the J.J. Abrams series is still in development which will see Chris Hemsworth return as George Kirk, father to James Kirk (Chris Pine). We haven't heard much about the potential project lately, but they could certainly do worse than to make use of Nicholas Meyer's expertise. I suppose we'll find out what Meyer was referring to before too long.

As for Star Trek: Discovery, they're currently in the midst of shooting the fifth episode of their fifteen-episode first season and it's expected that the series will (finally) debut this fall. When asked about the frequent delays which the production has experienced, executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently said that they stem from wanting to give the series all the time it needed in order to be the best Star Trek show it can be.

We postponed our schedule because the truth is we did not want to put out something that was subpar, and as the vision expanded we started feeling like we weren’t gonna be able to deliver the scope and the scale that was on the page. And CBS was extremely supportive in saying, ’Okay you know what, this is streaming, it’s not like we have to beat out right away, let’s do the best version of this, Trek is too important for all of us.’
