World of Warcraft movie comes together with Duncan Jones at the helm

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

After two successful stints in the modestly-budgeted sci-fi world with MOON and SOURCE CODE, director Duncan Jones has just signed on to direct what could be the biggest film adaptation of a video game ever mounted: WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing for Legendary Pictures (PACIFIC RIM, GODZILLA) along with video game developer Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. Charles Leavitt (BLOOD DIAMOND) wrote the screenplay.

For those who don’t play the game (like yours truly), WORLD OF WARCRAFT is an online game where players from around the world assume the roles of heroic fantasy characters and explore a virtual world full of mystery, magic, and endless adventure. Depending on the game you’re playing, you can encounter dragons and orcs, zombies and werewolves, aliens and spaceships – and everything in between.

It remains to be seen how Leavitt’s script has crafted a narrative from the multiplayer universe, but evidently Legendary is satisfied that the time is now to move forward. Now we wait for some casting news.

Back in 2009 it was announced that Sam Raimi would be directing WARCRAFT. Obviously, that did not work out.
