Somewhere the writing staff of Bob’s Burgers is screaming because a Working Girl reboot is on the way. 20th Century Studios is reviving the “sassy sister film to Die Hard,” with Selena Gomez in final negotiations to produce. Ilana Pena of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Diary of a Future President fame is adapting the script.
Plot details for the Working Girl reboot are unknown, but the 1988 film stars Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, and Joan Cusack. The story revolves around a secretary whose idea gets stolen by her boss. She then seizes an opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss’ job. Mike Nichols directed the original Working Girl. Nichols’ other career highlights include directing The Graduate, Catch-22, Biloxi Blues, The Birdcage, and more. Nichols’ Working Girl earned six Oscar nominations, including a Best Picture nod, Best Actress nomination for Melanie Griffith, and Supporting nominations for Cusack and Weaver.
Gomez remains a workhorse on the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building. In addition to her starring role, she executive produces the hilarious murder mystery series starring Steve Martin and Martin Short. Only Murders in the Building is currently airing its second season, with a third already on the way. Gomez also stars and produces the HBO Max reality series Selena + Chef.
