Matthew McConaughey revealed just last week that there’s a chance he could actually be related to his good friend Woody Harrelson. While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Woody Harrelson supported the theory that Matthew McConaughey and himself might be brothers.
“I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought,” Woody Harrelson said.”We talked to Ma Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time… I mean, this is crazy. We were in Greece, we were watching the U.S. team win the World Cup, and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, ‘You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets.’” When Matthew McConaughey’s mother stated that she “knew” Harrelson’s father, they both made note of her tone. “It was the ellipses I found a little troubling,” Harrelson said. “Or interesting. ‘I knew… your father.’“
Woody Harrelson said that the timing of Matthew McConaughey’s birth might just work out, and he wants his friend to take a DNA test to find out for sure. “The year of [Matthew’s] birth, nine months before, she was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim,” Harrelson said. “We want to go for a [DNA] test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.” McConaughey has said that he’s a little hesitant to know that information.
Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him? It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have worked together several times over the course of their career, and they’re set to reunite once more for Brother From Another Mother, a half-hour comedy series developed by David West Read (The Big Door Prize) The series will find the actors playing fictional versions of themselves, but their friendship will be put to the test “when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.” The Apple TV+ logline describes the ten-episode series as “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.”
