With all the news and concern about our beloved Man of Steel and Caped Crusader in regards to the upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE movie, many have forget to ask where Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is coming from. Her origin story is mostly unknown and going up against Batman and Superman in terms of popularity is a lost cause. So what origin will she have when the new film introduces her all over again for fans new and old? According to producer Charles Roven, who we heard from today concering Ben Affleck’s casting, Wonder Woman is “a demigod…her father was Zeus.”
I knew Wonder Woman’s backstory was a confusing one, but that doesn’t really clear it up all that much. Although this does go with the re-rebooted origin story introduced in 2011, when Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang began the characters New 52 story (which includes the lasso and sword depicted below). We still don’t know how much Zeus backstory will factor into the movie which also sets ups Batman, Lex Luthor and probably Aquaman.
Badass Digest described her original origin:
The Amazons were created by the gods using the souls of all the women murdered by men. There was, when it was all said and done, one soul remaining, the soul of the unborn daughter of the first woman to ever be murdered by a man. That woman was Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, and she molded a figure of clay and gave to it the soul of that unborn girl. The clay was animated and became Diana, who was gifted abilities from the gods.
That’s a very cool origin if you ask me; it might take a great vision to present it on screen, but if you watch the first minutes of MAN OF STEEL, you might say it’s doable. What preference do you have when it comes to Wonder Woman’s origin story for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE?
