Wonder Woman will be more “optimistic” than Batman v Superman

Critics of the DCEU seem to have taken issue with the rather dour tone which permeated BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and SUICIDE SQUAD, even suggesting that they borrow a little Marvel-style humour. I don't necessarily share that viewpoint, I'm glad the DC flicks carve out their own path, but I would like to see future DCEU movies shift up the tone from time to time. According to DCEU producer Deborah Snyder as she spoke with Variety, Patty Jenkins' upcoming WONDER WOMAN will wind up being very different in tone than previous DC films.

Wonder Woman is very different in tone and style than Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. We pick directors who have their own points of view, so that each of our films will have their own personality.

President of DC Entertainment Diane Nelson added that "there’s a misconception that DC or [parent studio] Warner Bros. has made a conscious decision for all our movies to be darker or edgier. That’s not the case. Fans of the DC universe know that there are characters, like Batman, who are darker, but there are others like Wonder Woman, who are hopeful, optimistic leaders, and the tone of this film represents that. Patty brought a beauty and a sense of lightness or humor, and a little romance to it, it’s a very aspirational movie." WONDER WOMAN director Patty Jenkins said that her inspiration for the film is Richard Donner's SUPERMAN; doesn't get much more optimistic than that.

Superman’ was all about you. It was about you watching and realizing what it would feel like to have great powers and do great things. It was full of love and emotion.

Of all the upcoming DCEU movies, I think I'm actually looking forward to WONDER WOMAN the most. Fingers crossed that they can actually pull it off. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers… and her true destiny.

WONDER WOMAN will hit theaters on June 2, 2017.
