The first reviews for Wonder Woman 1984 rolled out earlier today and were unanimously positive for the most part, which is nice to know as it gives us something to look forward to before we toss this year behind us. The upcoming sequel will bring the action into the 1980s and find Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) facing off against Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). If you'd like a little taste of Wonder Woman 1984 before the big debut, Warner Bros. have made the opening scene available online for all to see. Check that out above!
The opening scene flashes back to Diana's childhood on Themyscira as she takes part in a sort of Amazonian Olympics while under the watchful eye of Antiope (Robin Wright) and Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen). Our own JimmyO reviewed Wonder Woman 1984 and said that the film "feels very close in tone to the classic 1978 feature Superman with Christopher Reeve. There is hope, humor, adventure galore, and something rarely seen in modern cinema as of late, not an ounce of cynicism." I like the sound of that. JimmyO added that the film "is something special. From its breathtaking opening sequence to the refreshingly original final act, there is much to rejoice in. This is a joyful and thrillingly engaging sequel, one that manages to connect to everything that worked the first time around. Yet it still feels fresh." You can check out the rest of JimmyO's review right here.
Wonder Woman 1984 will debut in theaters and on HBO Max in the U.S. on December 25th.
