Marvel’s Wonder Man series will bring The Photograph director Stella Meghie into the fold. Meghie is directing multiple upcoming series episodes starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II (Aquaman, Candyman), with Destin Daniel Creton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, American Born Chinese) and Andrew Guest helming several episodes as well. Guest also acts as the head writer of Wonder Man, with Cretton executive producing.
Meghie is busy developing Disney’s live-action Tiana series for Disney+. The story revolves around the classic Disney character from the studio’s animated film The Princess and the Frog. Meghie is an executive producer on Tiana, making her available to get behind the camera for Wonder Man.
Wonder Man is one of Marvel‘s oldest characters, dating back to 1964 in the pages of Avengers #9. He began his comic book career as a villain but got reintroduced as a hero in the late 1970s. Wonder Man’s civilian name is Simon Williams, and he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers. As an actor and stuntman, Williams’ look included wearing a turtleneck, a red jacket, and sunglasses. Wonder Man strongly relates to Marvel characters Vision and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. The trio shared several adventures, with Wonder Man and Vision thinking of each other as brothers in action. After Vision was dismantled, the villain-turned-hero developed intense feelings for Wanda. Whether Marvel plans to introduce Mateen II’s character as a potential love interest for Wanda remains to be seen. However, now that Marvel is working on Vision Quest, a series featuring Paul Bettany’s Vision, we could see this complicated love triangle play out.
Previously, Marvel revealed Sir Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery is returning in the Wonder Man series. Nobody can guess how Slatery could appear in Marvel’s Wonder Man series. One way to introduce Slattery is through his acting pursuits. Reports indicate that Wonder Man intends to be a Hollywood satire, giving Slattery the perfect angle to appear in the series.
Marvel could take Wonder Man in several directions, given that he’s a relatively unknown character. Will they treat him like a brand-new hero or slide him into place alongside Wanda after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Could it be Wonder Man who eventually frees Wanda from her self-inflicted incarceration?
I’m excited to learn more about Marvel’s Wonder Man series. Feige and company have promised to bring the MCU in bold directions as the Multiverse Saga continues, making Wonder Man a wild card among several trick cards.
