The Witcher season two begins filming this month, adds new cast member

While Netflix's The Witcher wasn't exactly a smash hit with critics, the same cannot be said for the overall viewership. The sword and sorcery show has an astounding 92% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, The Witcher was Netflix's biggest season one launch of all-time as seventy-six million people streamed the show in the first four weeks alone. Just goes to show you what high production value, intriguing storylines, and Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) in a bathtub can do for you.

Not surprisingly a second season was given an almost and immediate greenlight, with the public clamoring for the further adventures of Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt of Rivia. Thankfully for fans of the magical monster hunter, filming on season two is just about to get underway. According to Deadline principal photography is set to begin this month in England, before expanding to Scotland and Eastern Europe. This is a bit of a departure from the first season which filmed mostly in Hungary, Spain, and the Canary Islands. It appears as though our pal Geralt is about to go gallivanting off to new locales.

In addition to the new filming locations, The Witcher is also adding a new cast member. Carmel Laniado (DOLITTLE) will take on the role of Violet, a young girl whose playful and whimsical demeanor is a front for a smarter and more sadistic character. Laniado will appear in at least three episodes. There's also been rumblings that Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju may join the cast although nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Although Carmel Laniado is a newcomer this is par for the course as both Freya Allan (Ciri) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) were relative unknowns before The Witcher.

As to the plot of The Witcher's sophomore season very little is known at this time. The second season is set to be less complex and more linear than the first, as all three characters' storylines will be fundamentally intertwined. There's also speculation that we will get more of Geralt's backstory along with a further examination of the origin of Witchers. Ah yes but will Baby Yoda show up? That's the real question.

Season two of The Witcher is expected to debut sometime in the late Fall of this year.
