We've been hearing word for what seems like forever now that director Ron Howard has been working on a sequel to his hit (scary as hell) fantasy flick WILLOW starring Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis. And today we have word via Howard himself that SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY screenwriter Jon Kasdan is in the midst of “serious discussions” to bring a Willow sequel series to Disney+.
Specifically, Howard says:
There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.
Davis is confirmed to return by Howard, who hints that the series will explore a “more mature Willow," with Howard adding:
Warwick will be in it. Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.
WILLOW was directed by Howard from a screenplay by Bob Dolman based on a story by George Lucas. The original film invited viewers to
Enter the world of "Willow." Journey to the far corners of your imagination, to a land of myth and magic, where dream and reality live side by side … to a place that never existed, a time that never was. It is a world where a young man named Willow lives out an adventure that explodes beyond the boundaries of his own hopes and fears.
Joe Johnston and Nigel Wooll produced the flick which starred Warwick Davis as Willow, Val Kilmer as Madmartigan, Kate and Ruth Greenfield / Rebecca Bearman as Elora Danan, Joanne Whalley as Sorsha, Jean Marsh as Queen Bavmorda, Patricia Hayes as Fin Raziel, Billy Barty as The High Aldwin, Pat Roach as General Kael, Gavan O'Herlihy as Airk Thaughbaer, Maria Holvöe as Cherlindrea, Kevin Pollak and Rick Overton as Rool and Franjean, David J. Steinberg as Meegosh, Mark Northover as Burglekutt, Phil Fondacaro as Vohnkar, Julie Peters as Willow's wife, and Malcolm Dixon and Tony Cox as a Nelwyn warriors. Disney+ is set to launch on November 12, 2019.
