William Brent Bell isn't one of those directors that I jump at the chance to check out his newest flick. And with films such as THE DEVIL INSIDE and THE BOY under his belt, you might see why. But all the same, I find myself intrigued by his new film – if only for the stellar cast that he's gathered.
Deadline reports today that the amazing Brian Cox (THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, every good movie of the past two decades) has joined the cast of Bell's supernatural thriller SEPARATION. And on top of Cox, the film has also snagged Madeline Brewer (see above, THE HANDMAID'S TALE), Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter, see below, John Carpenter's THE WARD), and little Violet McGraw (see below, The Haunting of Hill House).
The quartet of new actors joins the already announced Rupert Friend (HELLBOY, THE BOY, THE CANAL) in the thriller, which is being described as a cross between films like THE SIXTH SENSE and MAMA and takes on the horrifying consequences of divorce. Friend and Gummer play Jeff and Maggie, "a newly separated couple battling for custody of their 7-year-old daughter" (McGraw). Brewer plays the couple’s longtime nanny, and Cox is Maggie’s overbearing father.
Not much else is known about the plot of the film or other such details, but as I said above, with this cast in place, I will be keeping a close eye on William Brent Bell's SEPARATION and let you guys know as soon as I hear more.
Nick Amadeus and Joshua Braun penned the script which Bell is producing with Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman, Russ Posternak and Jesse Korman, along with Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser. Seth Posternak and Dennis Rice are executive producers. Jon Keeyes is co-producer.
