Rumors have been swirling around who will or won’t be in Spider-Man: No Way Home when it hits screens in December. After The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Jamie Foxx was confirmed to be coming back as Electro and Spider-Man 2’s Alfred Molina Doc Ock, was also confirmed for a return, many fans began speculating that we are about to get the live-action multiverse in the MCU. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have been rumored to return as their versions of Spider-Man and pretty much anyone else that has starred in any Spider-Man film is said to be involved. Amid all of these rumors Willem Dafoe, who played Norman Osborne aka Green Goblin in 2002’s Spider-Man, was asked about his potential return and the actor isn’t really confirming one way or another.
Dafoe recently did an interview with “The Wrap” and the actor was asked if there’s any truth to the rumors that he was making a Green Goblin return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Instead of plainly saying “no comment”, Dafoe instead said it’s best to maintain talking about a film when it’s about to come out. Dafoe said, “I got lots of stuff happening now. And, you know, I always feel like when a film comes out, that’s when it’s time to talk about it.”
Dafoe’s comment is different from most of the past Spider-Man actors who have been asked if they’re in the film because while they have flat out denied it, Dafoe offers up a bit more ambiguity. So much so that Marvel probably gave him a phone call if he’s actually in the Spidey sequel. Andrew Garfield, when asked, gave a long-winded answer about how he hasn’t even been approached but then walked back on those comments in a later interview by saying “never say never.” Emma Stone has denied a Gwen Stacy return while promoting Cruella and it appears many other actors from the Spidey past are trying to avoid the question entirely. I appreciate the secrecy and mystery behind the project, and I imagine this is part of the reason we haven’t gotten a trailer yet because it could very well give too much away, but I hope the film can live up to the hype that has been building, thanks mostly to fan speculation.
Spider-Man: No Way Home brings back Tom Holland as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man and he will be joined by Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Jacob Batalon, Maris Tomei, and J.B. Smoove. The third film will once again be directed by Jon Watts, from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
