After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival over two months ago, A24 has dropped the first trailer for the highly-anticipated second movie from Robert Eggers (THE WITCH) – THE LIGHTHOUSE. The period-fantasy-horror movie centers on two lighthouse keepers played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and the first trailer teases a maddening mystery and two utterly compelling performances from its leads, with Dafoe in particular sure to win over audiences as the saltiest of salty sea dogs.

The movie looks less like something you’d find in theaters today and more like a film that be shown in a special, archival screening room after it was unearthed from a collection of unseen films made 70 years ago. The trailer alone is an intense, gripping experience thanks to the tremendous visuals and those two performances at its core. At the same time, this certainly doesn't look like it will be for everyone, but anyone who found themselves loving everything about THE WITCH, this will be must-see viewing come October.
Co-written between Eggers and his brother Max, the movie is set in 1890 New England and was filmed in 35mm, with cinematography from Jarin Blaschke. The movie is already being hailed as one of the year's best, holding a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score after it was screened at Cannes, where it won the FIPRESCI prize, which in the past has gone to filmmakers such as Pedro Almodovar, Paul Thomas Anderson, Claire Denis and Werner Herzog.
THE LIGHTHOUSE is in theaters October 18.
