MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 already has Christopher McQuarrie directing and a Christmas Day 2015 release date, so what more does one film need? Ah yes, a writer to put a story together for the rejuvenated franchise. Paramount has now brought on Will Staples who has covered ground in the world of video games with Need for Speed: Rivals and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I can't say that his resume qualifies him to write an action film of this caliber, but after seeing what they did in IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, the pressure is on man! Staples will rewrite the existing draft by IRON MAN 3's Drew Pearce.
We have Tom Cruise returning as operative Ethan Hunt, alongside Simon Pegg and the rumored Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. The last entry in the series MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL brought in a worldwide gross of $694.7 million, which obviously secured the sequel. I enjoyed MI4's stylish and fast-paced action, it was pure popcorn entertainment; I can't wait to hear more about MI5.
I hope they up the ante (if that’s "possible") this time around because it's getting harder to compete with the bigger superhero movies getting all the attention.
Now, if they could just secure Paula Patton to return I'd think they would be on to something.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 hits theaters December 25, 2015.
