Last summer, Sony set release dates for BAD BOYS 3 and 4, however it hasn't been clear how Will Smith will be involved with the sequels. Previously there had been talk of Smith possibly only serving as a producer on the next installment, but it certainly sounds like he will be back as Detective Mike Lowrey, based on the recent comments he made during an appearance on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
I saw Martin [Lawrence] a few weeks ago. I hadn't seen him for about two years. We just looked at each other, and we hugged, and in that moment, we knew we were making another Bad Boys. We’re definitely doing another one.
Although this could still mean that Smith will only produce and/or have a cameo appearance, I think it's more likely that he will return to star alongside Lawrence in the threequel. Last we knew, Joe Carnahan was in talks to write and direct the BAD BOYS II follow-up, taking over for Michael Bay. Unfortunately, I have some bad news for all (seven of) you WILD WILD WEST fans out there: Smith also said there probably isn't going to be sequel.
BAD BOYS 3 is slated to hit theaters on February 17, 2017, followed by BAD BOYS 4 on July 3, 2019. Will Smith can be seen next playing Deadshot in David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD on August 5, 2016, while Martin Lawrence, well, he really needs BAD BOYS 3.
