Just yesterday it was revealed that Ang Lee (THE LIFE OF PI) was in negotiations to direct GEMINI MAN, a high-concept action thriller from Skydance which has been in and out of development for twenty years. THR reports that the studio is already courting a big name to lead the film as it seems that Will Smith is currently in talks to star in GEMINI MAN.
The film follows an "aging assassin who tried to get out of the business but finds himself in the ultimate battle: fighting his own clone who is 25 years younger than him and at the peak of his abilities." The project was first set up at Disney in 1997 with the late Tony Scott set to direct, but it was long considered to be unfilmable because visual effects technology hadn't yet caught up with the concept. We seem to have reached the point where it's totally feasible to have Will Smith clash with his younger self, so GEMINI MAN is back on the table. Neither Will Smith nor Ang Lee's deals has been finalized just yet, but it would certainly be an exciting pairing for an interesting project. Fingers crossed.
One of the issues to be worked out with Will Smith is his schedule as his name has popped up in connection with several big projects lately, including voicing the Genie in Guy Ritchie's (KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD) live-action adaptation of ALADDIN for Disney. Talks for ALADDIN are still in the early stages, but it's something to consider before immediately connecting Will Smith to GEMINI MAN. Will Smith will next be seen in BRIGHT as a human detective who battles the forces of evil alongside his Orc partner (Joel Edgerton) as they seek to seize control of an all-powerful wand. The David Ayer flick is set to debut on Netflix sometime in December 2017.
