Will Sam Mendes return to direct the followup to Skyfall?

With SKYFALL raking in huge domestic and international box office numbers, there was no doubt the James Bond franchise was back and better than ever. We have already heard the news that screenwriter John Logan was going to return with one or more 007 movies, possibly two films with a continuous plot. But, no mention was made of Sam Mendes returning to the director’s seat.

In a recent interview, co-screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote the last five Bond movies, stated they are officially done writing for the Bond series. But, they gave an idea of who will possibly be working with Logan on the next film.

IndieWire reports that Robert Wade shared this at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival: “We’re very happy to have done five Bond movies, I think we’ve gotten it to a good place,” Wade said. “I know that John Logan and Sam Mendes have come up with a plot for another one, which takes the pressure off because these films take up a lot of time.”

Take that for what it is worth. Mendes has other projects that he is working on, so he could possibly be executive producing the 24th Bond movie and not have anything to do with the director’s seat. If the targeted 2014 release for the next film is to be believed, Mendes would have to get started as soon as possible.

Mendes brought some of the best direction to any of the Bond films with SKYFALL. The events that take place in the movie completely refresh the franchise for Daniel Craig and whichever actor eventually succeeds him. I would be all for Mendes returning. What do you think?
