Will Michael Fassbender take on the Templars in an Assassin’s Creed movie?

This is… whoa. This woke me up far more than coffee, tea, or a bushel of apples ever could. This blows my mind if it is actually happening.  Before we go on, as there’s far too much to sum up with what ASSASSIN’S CREED is about exactly, you can answer any and all questions here.

Now: Michael Fassbender is currently being named as the man producing and starring in Ubisoft’s long gestating big screen adaptation of Ubisoft’s ridiculously good and high-selling series.  It seems that Fassbender, along with being the best part of a certain film released recently, has also spent the better part of this past year building a production company called DMC Film.  After backing a short called PITCH BLACK HEIST, Fassbender and DMC Film have decided to swiftly step into the ring with ASSASSIN’S CREED being the company’s first big project.  This is probably a very good idea, as no matter what the quality of the end product may be an ASSASSIN’S CREED project is going to make bank and then some considering how the franchise as a whole has sold over thirty million units since 2007.  

Hopefully it actually is good though. Once upon a time Sony was set to work with Ubisoft in bringing the centuries-long war between Assassins and Templars to life, but now Ubisoft has expressed interest in packaging a writer and director with the project before taking it again to Sony (or other studios).  Other financial questions are also being explored in the meantime, ones such as whether money might be saved by having several of the in-house studios handle the necessary visual effects.

There was some dismay expressed in Hollywood last fall about the amount of control that Ubisoft was demanding for the ASSASSIN’S CREED franchise, but I’m all for it.  It’s true that Microsoft’s demand for such control is what brought HALO crashing down, but Ubisoft looks to be going about things in a more controlled and sensible manner such as raising money via co-production deals and foreign presales.  And having a talented bastard such as Michael Fassbender on board certainly can only better inspire Ubisoft to do right by this opportunity, so that’s encouraging.

Ubisoft also recently launched a company called UMP (Ubisoft Motion Pictures) that is lead by Jean-Julien Baronnet, former CEO of EuropaCorp (Luc Besson’s production company), which has been built with the specific intention of helping shepherd movies based on Ubisoft’s games into existence. SPLINTER CELL and GHOST RECON are already on the hopeful docket for the studio, but is there anything else you’d really like to see Ubisoft translate to the big screen?
