Will Forte is still committed to getting MACGRUBER 2 made. During a conversation with EW, the actor said “There’s nothing I would rather do than that,” and “It’s not a question of if but when." However, Forte is a little busy right now working on the second season of his Fox series The Last Man on Earth, and won't have any free time to develop the sequel with director Jorma Taccone and screenwriter John Solomon until February.
But the trio do have two-thirds of an outline completed, and Forte says they'll move on to writing the script once it's finished to make sure their dick jokes are up to snuff.
Then, of course, we have to take maybe a month to have a dick-joke pass where we make our dick jokes better. And then we’ll do another dick joke pass. And then we’ll see where it is from there.
Forte went on to tease that they have an insane idea for the opening scene of the sequel.
There is a possibility of starting it in a way that you would never ever start an action movie. We have this idea for a cold open, which we just don’t know if we have the balls to do. And we’ve done some crazy stuff. This is just like, ‘Do we really want to do this? Is this how we want to start out the movie?’ It’s pretty gnarly. But we might just have to do it.
Last week we learned a reimagined MacGyver reboot is in the works at CBS, and although Forte doesn't think anyone will contact him about doing a cameo, says "It'd be an honor." The actor also said he approves of the reboot.
I approve more than I approve of anything in the world. MacGruber wouldn’t exist — for legal reasons I can’t say that. But certainly we owe the entire MacGruber series to the existence of MacGyver. So I very much hope that [MacGyver star] Richard Dean Anderson is a major part of that reboot because he was the best and was so wonderful to us, and did a part on some MacGrubers for SNL.
Forte and company will still have to find funding for MACGRUBER 2 though, which isn't going to be an easy task since the first one grossed less than $10 million worldwide and didn't make back its budget. But I'm all for another movie, and hopefully someone will take a chance on the sequel.
