Will Forte says MacGruber 2 is first priority after The Last Man on Earth

It was nearly five years ago when MACGRUBER took to the big screen. It was pulled from theaters just three weeks later, becoming one of the biggest flops of 2010. It somehow managed to find itself a following and rumors of a sequel have been floating around for a few years. MacGruber himself Will Forte is now writing, producing, and starring in Fox’s newest sitcom The Last Man on Earth and the latest news suggests that he hasn’t forgotten about the proposed sequel.

It sounds like Will Forte will get the ball rolling on his new sitcom and then his first priority will be MACGRUBER 2. Speaking with The Wrap, Forte emphasized that yes, he is serious:

“It seems like we have a realistic shot at getting it made. We have a loose outline of the first couple of acts, which we’re really excited about. So we’ve just got to flesh it out a little more.”

With JOE DIRT 2 on the horizon, it’s no surprise to see movies that would otherwise never see a box office again turning their resources to the Internet or streaming services like Netflix. I could see the MACGRUBER sequel land on an on-demand service, skipping the potential repeat of a flop in theaters.

“If [The Last Man on Earth] were to ever be successful enough to get a second season, we’d probably have to wait until after that season to make it. If the show isn’t successful enough to do that, we’d probably jump in right away.”

He also expected the entire cast to return for MACGRUBER 2; Ryan Phillippe at least said last year that they were “very close” to making it and “wait until you find out who’s going to be in it, the villain is going to blow your mind.”

So if you're a fan of MACGRUBER, tell your friends not to watch The Last Man on Earth. But if you like Will Forte and the talent behind the show such as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who executive produce and directed the first two episodes – then you may want to watch.

The Last Man On Earth premiere this Sunday, March 1, on Fox.
