Will Fincher be back to direct the Dragon Tattoo sequels?

I am sure we were all quite relieved when Sony officially announced that it would be moving ahead with US versions of THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST, the sequels to THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. However it is looking likely that director David Fincher might not be back to direct those sequels.

How is that possible? Well it seems that he is moving ahead with 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, which he plans to shoot in the fall or towards the end of the year. That project has a script written by Scott Z. Burns and it may perhaps have a 3D element and a lot of CGI, so in short it will take some time to complete.

With Sony wanting to have THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE released by the end of 2013, there isn’t much room for Fincher to get in there. He is also not under contract for the trilogy, however Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are, with Steve Zaillian apparently returning to pen the scripts.

Behind the scenes it is being reported that Fincher bumped heads with the studio because he wanted a longer cut of the film, despite the fact it ended up at 2 and a half hours long. And they were not behind his choice of Rooney Mara either, bit then again who was after her ELM STREET remake performance? So for now we should probably not expect Fincher to return, but question is who would replace him and do he want to see these films without him?
