Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be having one hell of a prolific year in 2013, with SNITCH, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, PAIN AND GAIN, FAST AND FURIOUS 6, and EMPIRE STATE in the bag. So, pretty much if you hate Johnson, which is kind of impossible, then you are going to have a shitty year at the movies. He’s everywhere. Now, the actor is saying that there is discussion about spinning off his FAST AND FURIOUS character, Luke Hobbs, into his own feature.
Johnson’s inclusion in FAST FIVE was one of the signature reasons that the film rocked as much as it did, so it was a no brainer that he needed to be involved in the next one…and the next one…and the next one. He told Empire that spinning off Hobbs was “the goal,” explaining:
“[We could see the Hobbs movie] possibly after this one, after the next one. Possibly. I’m not quite too sure, I know that’s the goal and we continue to build that character and have him take shape. But yes, I can’t wait.”
I think it’s a smart move. Johnson has struggled to find a franchise and he really seemed to click with Hobbs in FAST FIVE, so this may well be the opportunity to finally solidify his own franchise character, much like his fellow actions stars have. He’s more than earned it and seems to be making all the right plays after a few detours into kiddie fare. He’s suffered enough.
Johnson’s Hobbs will next be seen in FAST AND FURIOUS 6, along with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, Ludacris, Elsa Pataky, Sung Kang, and Tyrese Gibson, on May 24, 2013.
