SP Media Group will be giving writer/director James Bird’s sci-fi thriller Wifelike a VOD and limited theatrical release on August 12th, and today an interesting trailer for film has made its way online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Mission: Impossible III) and Elena Kampouris (Jupiter’s Legacy), Wifelike tells the following story:

A grieving detective in the near future hunts down criminals who trade artificial humans on the black market. In the fight to end AI exploitation, an underground resistance attempts to infiltrate him by sabotaging the programming of the artificial human assigned as his companion to behave like his late wife. She begins to question her reality as memories of a past life begin to surface in a world where nothing is as it seems.

Meyers and Kampouris are joined in the cast by C.J. Perry (Cosmic Sin), Doron Bell (Snowpiercer), Agam Darshi (DMZ), Alix Villaret (Blind Ghost), Fletcher Donovan (Crawlspace), Sara Sampaio (Crisis), Rachelle Goulding (Roadhouse Romance), Caitlin Stryker (Land of Smiles), Claire Friesen (Debris), Sean Yves Lessard (A Splash of Love), Sari Mercer (Wicked Mom’s Club), newcomer Chezca Vega, Bradley Stryker (Let Him Go), Stuart James (Superman & Lois), Mellanie Hubert (Britney Ever After), Stephen Lobo (Continuum), Albert Nicholas (Lucifer), and Steve Weller (Take Two).

Wifelike was produced by Steven Paul and Scott Karol, with Christine Holder and Mark Holder serving as executive producers. This is the fifth feature for Bird, who has previously directed the comedy Eat Spirit Eat, the love story Honeyglue, the fantasy film We Are Boats, and the sci-fi movie The Circuit: Star Crew. I honestly haven’t seen any of his movies up to this point, but I do like the variety he is showing in his career so far.
