Paul Rudd may have been the main draw of Ant-Man, but his Cassie has proven to be a pivotal role in the series, undoubtedly serving as part of the buzz. From a small but narratively important role in 2015’s Ant-Man to now a major component of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Cassie has developed into a genuine fan favorite.
Cassie Scott, who is now 18 in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is now teaming up with her father and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) as they get transported to the Quantum Realm and face off against Kang the Conqueror.
In an interview with NerdBunker, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed elaborated on how Cassie fits into the themes of the third installment. “I think we’ve all grown and what we want to do with the movies and how we see the character, the family dynamics, to us, after the events of [Avengers: Infinity War] and Endgame, it really occurred to us, obviously, ‘Well, Cassie’s going to be 18 in this movie, that’s great.’ The whole theme is time and how much time he’s missed, and his main motivation is just, ‘I want time with my daughter.’ And now he’s coming into contact with a villain in this movie, Kang the Conqueror, who has dominion over time, and what does that mean to them?”
Reed also went into how Cassie has evolved over the Ant-Man trilogy. “I love the idea of Scott still relating to Cassie as a kid. But she’s not, she’s a young adult now. She has her own ideas about what it means to do good in the world and she’s trying to find her own voice as a hero. And she can also be a little critical of her father. That seemed really rich–something very relatable with families.”
Reed also noted that Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) stands out as a figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because he’s more or less a normal guy. One aspect that does make the Ant-Man movies stand out is indeed the character of Cassie, here portrayed by Kathryn Kathryn Newton.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrives on February 17th, 2023 and kicks off Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
