Luc Besson is constantly cranking out new movies as a writer and producer, but doesn’t get behind the camera often enough. The last time he directed a biopic, we got (then-wife) Milla Jovovich as historical ass-kicker Joan of Arc in THE MESSENGER (unless ARTHUR AND THE MINIMOYS was based on a true story). In his latest THE LADY, Michelle Yeoh kicks ass… democratically.
Synopsis: THE LADY is the story of Aung San Suu Kyi, the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement, and her husband, Michael Aris. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end.
The movie premieres next month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Besson is reportedly also working on his anticipated return to directing big-budget sci-fi, although the current status of that project is unknown (probably because he’s occupied with the TAKEN sequel, THE TRANSPORTER cable series and a dozen other things).
