Three-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with Blumhouse's Whistler Camp.
Set at a gay conversion camp, Logan's horror film is meant to serve as a queer empowerment story. Casting is currently underway with Jason Blum and Michael Aguilar (Penny Dreadful, Kidding) producing.
With Whistler Camp, Logan, a three-time Academy Award nominee for The Aviator, Hugo, and Gladiator, is in a unique position to buck the "bury your gays" trope that is found in literature as well as so many films across Hollywood. Of course, "bury your gays" refers to the tired trend of queer characters being more likely to die than straight characters in cinema. The trope implies that queer characters have less to offer than straight characters, which is positively absurd.
Logan has many notable film credits to his name including Skyfall, Spectre, The Last Samurai, Sweeney Todd, Rango, Alien: Covenant, and Any Given Sunday. He's also the creator of Penny Dreadful, which tells me that Whistler Camp could be just as stylish as it is scary. No plot details for the film have been shared at this time, leaving many to wonder what type of horror movie Whistler Camp will be.
