CONSTANTINE, starring all-around awesome dude, Keanu Reeves, seems to be way more popular nowadays than when it first hit theaters back in 2005. It did alright at the domestic box office, grossing $76 million, but with Reeves still hot off THE MATRIX, I was a little surprised it wasn't an even bigger hit. I do believe it would have received a better reception now, with the success of many other comic book movies, dark or not. However, things were just different 15 years ago and apparently, even though a sequel was at one time on the table, the film's dark depiction of religious beliefs was what ultimately led to it never seeing the light of day.
“Religion is a polarizing element in storytelling,” Lawrence said in the interview. “The subject matter of the story was just putting people off.” Here's the full San Diego Comic Con@Home interview with Keanu as well as Akiva Goldsman (the film's producer) and Francis Lawrence (the film's director) discussing the possible sequel and much more:
What do you guys think? Would you still be game for Keanu to come back to battle demons with his fiery wrists? Or is it time that CONSTANTINE hung up his trench coat? Please fire them comments below!
